The President welcomed 30 members and visitors from Plumley, Lach Dennis, Lower Peover, Selina Scott from the Cheshire Federation of W.I.s and Viv Cunningham a past member of Over Peover W.I to the Garden Meeting. The catering committee had provided a wonderful supper, members producing flowers on all the tables and thanks to the committee for raffle prizes.
Eleven members had entered the Cheshire Show and had been very successful including one first, three seconds, two thirds and a commended.
The Flower Festival at St. Lawrence Church organised by a W.I. member had been extremely successful, teas and cakes organised by the W.I. raised £240, the church receiving a donation of £125. The remainder of the money was used to frame the banner embroidered to celebrate 100 years of the Women’s Institute for display in the meeting room.
The Over Peover Street Party to celebrate The Queen’s 90th Birthday had been well attended and a great success. The W.I. provided and served teas and cakes and the £238 raised was donated to the East Cheshire Hospice.
Future Events include a trip to Wentworth Woodhouse, afternoon tea at The Clink, Styal Prison.
A visit to the Manchester Museum, a shopping trip to Liverpool and a Fashion Show by Fizz.
A social event at the Plough and Flail, Mobberley has been booked for August.
The monthly walk was arranged for Wincle, all members, guests and dogs welcomed.
The Book Club would meet in August and the Embroidery Group in September.
The evening speaker was Geoff Higginbottom entertaining us with ‘Folk Songs’.
Geoff had started singing when he was very young and was taught Sea Shanties by his grandmother. He travels all over the country singing in pubs, clubs and other venues.
He took us on an amusing journey singing and playing various instruments, from the UK to America. The final song for the evening was done with a wooden puppet dancing on a plank of wood, which had the ladies in peals of laughter.
We meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and the speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are most welcome.
