The President welcomed 30 members including 1 new member and 1 guest, all members wearing red, white and blue in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday enjoying  birthday cake and Prosecco.

The meeting then allowed members time to discuss the 2 resolutions for 2016:

Resolution 1

‘We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities that will enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia who have been admitted into hospital’.

Resolution 2

‘The WI calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid waste, thereby passing surplus food onto charities thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty within the UK’.

Members agreed to both resolutions being put forward.

Details were circulated for The Royal Cheshire Show to support the making of exhibits and Tea Loaves.

Members were given details of 2 talks in September at Tatton Park on Fruit and Vegetable growing.

Goostrey WI invited members to their Garden Party “A meeting with Pam Ayres’ in September.

Members confirmed availability for baking cakes and serving teas in support of the Saints and Heroes Flower Festival in Over Peover on the 3rd of June.

Brosters Nursery have very kindly provided new planters and red, white and blue plants for the village hall in celebration of the Queen’s birthday, members have agreed to plant up in time for the flower show. Also a watering rota has been agreed throughout the Summer months.

Our trips for upcoming months are as follows:

Wentworth House and Park on the 13th of July.

A trip to the ‘Clink’ restaurant at Styal Prison for afternoon tea in August.

Details were provided for a trip to Buckingham Palace and Windsor in September.

A fund raising fashion show has been confirmed by Fizz in October.

Members very much enjoyed a 6k circular walk in the Northwich area including a visit to the Bluebell Cottage Nursery and a stop at the Award winning Davenports Tea Room and Farm Shop in May. The June walk has been re-arranged to 17th June, details will be emailed to members.

5 members then presented to the group on some of their volunteering experiences including:

  • Roslyn Field, the significant challenges volunteering in a Children’s hospital in South Africa with children suffering from cancer and in the severe burns unit.
  • Angela Eccles & Judy Wienholdt, Road Runner – adventures driving a minibus for locals for 15 years after the public bus service was cancelled.
  • Frances Campbell, training and volunteering across Cheshire in a Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Barbara Wilson, volunteering in the Victory Ceremonies Team at the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002.
  • Helen Skelton, volunteering at East Cheshire Hospice ensuring weekly fresh flower arrangements.

The June Garden Meeting  will be hosting visiting W.I.s.

We meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and the speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are most welcome.
