PRESS REPORT
OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING
THURSDAY 27th FEBRUARY 2014
A lusty rendition of Jerusalem was followed by business which included encouragement to enter and support this year’s Cheshire Show, Village Hall news which was all positive and finalising dates for trips, fashion show and our summer meal. Zumba classes are also planned, proving that we don’t let the grass grow under our feet here.
Our president Mrs June Leech welcomed the speaker – ex-policeman, Mr Jack Turnbull who delighted the assembled company with stories about “The Lighter Side of Hotel Security”. Juicy snippets about famous guests and amusing anecdotes about the more eccentric ones were his stock in trade and his story about the slowly diminishing cheese display was very funny. However, he also enlightened us about the history of the Midland Hotel itself. Built in the early 1900s, it was previously a “Gentleman’s Theatre” and used as a market and shops, but of course had no parking space which still causes problems. We might have liked to hear more about “The Assignation Suite” but of course Mr Turnbull’s tact prevented him from going further. Shame!
Audrey Mottershead and Audrey Lowe provided the delicious cakes and the flowers which were sent to Julie Haighton. We meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are very welcome.
