OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

REPORT OF MEETING THURSDAY 28TH JULY 2011

June Leech, our co-president, welcomed 24 members and Jerusalem was sung very sweetly. Business included invitations from other WIs to their events, a competition to make a “Little Black Dress” and a “Jam Festival”. A letter from the Parish Council informed that no further funding could be made available as there is currently no management committee to administer it. Members were asked to consider serving on the joint committee. Planned trips to Eyam well-dressing, Buckingham Palace, “Top Hat” the musical and a “Fizz” fashion show were all covered and final details of the August meeting and meal at The Roebuck in Mobberley were confirmed. Judy Wienholdt reminded us of The Village Show on 10th September and encouraged entries. So much to anticipate with pleasure!

Our speaker on “The Ascent of Man – And Woman” was Stephen Davies – an ex teacher at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. With a confident and slightly impish manner, he outlined the fantastic journey of evolution which resulted in us being here on Earth now. His timeline, provocatively pegged on a washing line, covered the main events from the formation of the planet to the emergence of mankind 2 million years ago. It was hugely interesting to discover how we know many of the facts and figures he gave us. It was a massive subject to cover and difficult to condense but the audience was fascinated to the end and full of questions.

Jean Irlam and Margaret Nightingale served marvellous meringues and mouth-watering citrus cakes and provided the beautiful flower arrangement which was sent to Alison Maude. The next meeting will be our social evening at The Roebuck on 25th August.
