OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING – THURSDAY 31st MAY 2012
In honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, 23 members, wearing red, white and blue, were welcomed with “bubbly & nibbles”by co-president Connie Welton, sporting a chic little hat, and the loyal toast was proposed by Minty Day. Minty continued with an anecdote about the Olympic torch procession when the 1948 Games were in UK and Jean Irlam told us about her paraplegic relative who recently carried the torch through Knutsford.
Final arrangements were made regarding the Cheshire Show. Invitations had been received from Byley and Ollerton to their meetings. The Cheshire Federation Autumn Meeting is on the 2nd October and the guest speaker will be Gordon Burns. Connie thanked members for spring-cleaning the hall and planting up the tubs and asked for volunteers for a rota to water the tubs. Our treasurer Rosalind Jackson is to open her garden in aid of Over Peover W.I. on Thursday 5th July. Julie Haighton confirmed the outing to Abbeywood Gardens Delamere on the 7th August and the visit to Buckingham and Kensington Palaces. Members volunteered to make floral table centres for the Garden Meeting in June. Over Peover Golf Club had been selected for our August meeting and meal and menus were circulated. Minty asked for more Royal memorabilia for the Jubilee display and volunteers to man it.
The Speaker was Jean Harding, co-vice chair of the Cheshire Federation of WIs. She told us about ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) Cheshire Federation Projects. ACWW is active in more than 70 countries and is concerned with educating women in order that they can improve their situation. It also concentrates on providing water by establishing at least one standpipe in every village. Projects include providing sewing machines so that women could make clothes and school uniforms, the means to make rugs, help to grow their own vegetables for better nutrition and self-sufficiency. The crux is that the relatively small amounts, just a few £1000s, go directly to the project via ACWW agents. It became clear just how much good can come from so little if only it gets into the right hands. We are now determined to put our “pennies” into the ACWW “friendship box”.
Mrs. Mary Bowers and Mrs Rosalind Jackson were thanked for providing the flowers and the refreshments including the wine and nibbles. The flowers were sent to co-president June Leach. On 28th June we will hold our “Garden Meeting” with guests from other WIs and Bob McGregor will tell us about “The Magic of Toys”.
