PRESS REPORT
OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETINGS
THURSDAYS 31st JAN 2013, 28th FEB 2013
Over Peover WI has had a very exciting and busy couple of months. At our last meeting on 28th February, there were some very welcome new faces. In traditional fashion, Jerusalem was sung and then we were given information about the Cheshire Show in June and two proposed WI resolutions to do with Care of the elderly and Fire Alarms. Also some lovely outings are planned: Bury Market in April and Arley Hall in May, as well as Media City in the autumn. In September the biennial Village Show in Over Peover Village Hall will again be organised by the WI for the enjoyment of the whole village. Dean Johnson gave us a passionate talk “Hope for the Future” about a charity “FAST” set up to help the ostracised Roma people in Rumania who live in conditions similar to the townships in South Africa. Dean and his assistant Sue Oliver told of their hands-on experience helping the foundation to improve living conditions and education for these persecuted people. We were left fascinated and touched by the story of these volunteers and their labour of love.
A respectable profit from the fashion show was reported at the January meeting. Worrying reports were received regarding a cut in the bus service through our village and the lack of progress in improving our broadband speed. Ex-primary school teacher and ex- Akela, Janet Bradshaw, made a welcome return to talk to us about “The Gilt on the Gingerbread” – how she brings Tatton Old Hall to life in mediaeval times for groups of school children. They dress up to get into the mood and get involved in activities including willow weaving, chestnut paling, mediaeval cookery on a fire-basket, potions with the apothecary, archery and searching for poachers. The children hear and see how the red deer and the fallow deer grow and shed their antlers. They get the chance to touch and prepare food in a way that modern “food technology” lessons don’t allow. What a wonderful and fun way to teach children.
Over Peover WI meets at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are always welcome. Come and visit.
